WP 9 Validation and Test

  WP 9 Validation and Test
Four different Industrial Experimental Setups (IES) variants have been identified in a previous stage, varying in time and extent.

The first Industrial Experimental Setup refers to a bundle of diverse test implementations that use the Virtual Automation Networks Common Platform (to a certain degree). It has been achieved in October 2007 and concerns several implementations - test applications and studies that were made for measurements and evaluation. They use as much as possible the original planning of the Virtual Automation Networks Common Platform.

Factory Automation Industrial Experimental Setup The remaining IESs are final prototypes that have been made available in three different stages before the end of the project. The first one is relative to the implementation of mechanisms to make safe data transfer over wired and wireless networks in industrial environments; the second one, relative to manufacturing automation, is a manifold production system developed as a common IES with the EC STREP PABADIS'PROMISE; the last one is a biogas power plant, showing the VAN potentialities in the field of process automation.

The requirements for the IESs have been collected and the implementing options outlined.

The IES for diagnosis, an example for migration of an existing application into the VAN Environment, has not been shown as a separate IES; instead the related activities (where useful to show the VAN benefits) have been split and comprised in the foretold IESs

In addition to this, task WP9 has also dealt with the validation of the Engineering Tools.

Achievements and Results

Virtual Automation Networks consortium has provided two Industrial Experimental Setups scenarios. They are a remote controlled machining line which is an upgrade of the IES of EC STREP PABADIS'PROMISE, that is, the IES FA (Factory Automation), and a biogas power plant, that is, the IES PA (Process Automation).

Factory Automation: The IES FA shows the real-time communication capabilities of VAN solution with two numerical controls (one attached to a real machine, one simulating another one), a manipulator robot, a conveyor belt and two coordinators (one on factory level, one on a remote site). A number of these devices are VAN devices, the others have required the development of proxies (in the final stages of completion). The implementation of the Telecontrol Profile and of the CBA server on most of the devices has been conducted successfully as well as the first communication tests.

In addition to these devices, the IES FA shows remote safety control via DSL connection thanks to one F-Host and one F-device; initial test of this connection have been done successfully from Bad Pyrmont to Magdeburg.

Finally, the IES FA shows secure file transfer thanks to OpenVPN tunnel establishment.

Process Automation: The work includes the validation and test using the real technological plant (Final step of validation), whereas the IES PA consists of the following parts:
  • Central control and maintenance system.
  • System for communication between central and local control system.
  • Local Controller and I/O system as interfaces to geographically distributed biogas power plants with an integrated process simulation environment.
  • A switching concept between the simulated and the real process has been designed.

WP9 selected technological sub processes on real biogas plants for the demonstration of the VAN functionality. These processes are:
  • Process stabilization: Preventing of foaming during the biomass fermentation based on the vinegar acid concentration in the produced biogas.
  • Process optimisation: Optimisation of the gas storage and the Power plant (CHP) regarding the production of electrical energy.

Virtual Automation Networks technology has been tested and demonstrated with VAN devices based on embedded VAN devices and VAN software modules supplied by the other work packages (WP4-8).

The IES Process Automation (IES PA) covers special test scenarios for:
  • VAN communication based on CBA OPC
  • Secured data transfer by tunnelling
  • Telecontrol profile
  • Observing the QoS and resulting provider switching

WP9 integrates the implementations of Telecontrol Profile, QoS Monitoring, Tunnel maintenance regarding switching and the Prototypical Implementation of Provider Switching into the IES PA system for validation and test using the simulated technological plant.

The Telecontrol profile serves to the transmission of data between the local controllers of biogas stations and the central control system.
